How to Knit

As more and more people return to the hobbies of yesteryear, more people are enjoying learning to knit. It's a relaxing, rewarding, and fun hobby, one that can produce clothes, accessories, and decorations to love from years to come. But, if you're just starting to have an interest in it, you might be wondering how to knit in the first place. It really isn't that difficult… and it's a lot of fun!

Needles

You'll need to choose the proper sized needles for use with your first project. Since you're likely a beginner, you'll want something that's easy to handle. That means something that isn't too large to use comfortably, nor too small. A medium-sized knitting needles, such as a size six, seven, or eight makes a great needle choice for the inexperienced.

Yarn

Like the needles, you'll need yarn that a beginner can work with, too. This means that you should avoid anything that is ridiculously bulky, very thin and dainty, or some complex yarn, such as the kind that is crinkly or very fuzzy. Instead, go with a light-worsted or medium-worsted weight yarn. It's a great choice for a wide variety of projects.

Tying a Slip Knot

To get started with your knitting, you'll need to make a slip knot. With one piece of yarn, fold it over so that it makes a loop and is running parallel to itself. Then, twist the yarn, so that it makes an X. Next, pull the left-hand string through the loop, tightening it a bit. Stick the needle through, then tighten around the needle.

Casting Off

Holding the knitting needle with the slip knot on it in one hand, drape the yarn that you're working with around your free hand in a loop. Take the knitting needle, then slip it through that loop. Once you've done that, you'll need to pull the loop tightly around the knitting needle. Repeat until you have all of the stitches that you need.

The First Stitch

Now, move the needle with the stitches on it to your non-dominant hand, and take the other needle into your dominant hand. With the free needle, push it through the front of the very first loop on the second needle. Make sure that the right needle is sitting behind the left needle. Wrap your yarn around the right needle clockwise. It will be sitting between your needles. Always wrap the yarn back to front. There should be a hole in between your needles, almost like a figure eight. Now, poke the left needle through the hole on the left side. Go slowly; don't let the loop fall off.

The Following Stitches

Now, pull off the old stitch, and you're ready to move on. You'll be looking for a knot here; that's all that knitting really is! Keep doing this stitch, going down the needle, until you have run out of stitches on the first needle.

Switch Needles and Repeat

You're done with the first round of stitches when all of the stitches have left the first needle, and moved on to the second needle. After that, keep going, changing needles as needed. You've got it now!

Knitting isn't as hard as many people think. This soothing, creative activity is a great choice for anyone looking for a bit of relaxing fun, or something to do with their hands. Give knitting a try; it's great!
